Amazing Encounter – Olso

Who is the attractive young woman? Keep reading.

But first,

Did the touristy thing! We bought tickets for a tour of the Oslo Fjord and nearby islands, touted as a guided sightseeing tour on a historic wooden boat. It was a fun tour of the bay which included a few tidbits of information about Oslo and the surrounding area.

Likely would have been equally as entertaining at a fraction of the cost on the local residential ferry boat.

The remainder of the day was spent enjoying the city by foot. Oslo center is chock-full of high density apartments and commercial buildings, modern and almost space age looking.

More grocery store experiences. What is this? “Smak* Flotesaus” My translation says “small sauce”, hum? An array of condiments in tubes; catsup, mayonnaise, many kinds of mustards from sweet to spicy. Next, automated checkout, first, change the language to English.

Yeah, veggies. We bought kale in a bag. Living in California we are spoiled with year-round fresh produce, we crave fruits and veggie when traveling. Kale seemed easy, except, maybe not. We pan sauteed it in a little oil like we do at home, uneatable. Ok, we steamed it with a bit of water, nope, still uneatable. Steamed it longer, longer, really a long time. Nope, not eatable at all, a bit like eating shredded plastic. So much for kale, made a salad instead.

And who is this you ask? My cousin! Whom I haven’t seen in nearly 40 years and had no idea lives in Oslo. Her uncle emailed me with contact info when he learned, through the blog, we were in Oslo. What a wonderful discovery. We spent the afternoon together sharing family stories and getting to know each other. By far the best part of the trip so far.

Oslonions do make good coffee.

  1. I love the kale story. How challenging it is to do the simplest things (like grocery shop) in other countries is one of the most fun parts of travel. so glad you got to meet your cousin–yes, connections with people are the best. I’ve never been to Oslo. Looks like a great place. You make me want to be traveling again!

  2. It sure looks like you’re having fun! What a treat to see your long-lost cousin again.

How can kale be inedible? Sounds like you found some, though. We are so spoiled with produce here.

All the sculpture is so whimsical and loving and fun. And so impossible to have in this messed up country! That’s sad, isn’t it, what we miss because of the lunatics here?

Do you expect to see the Northern Lights while in Norway?

    Big hugs to you both!
