How to spot a tourist?

Having lived in Santa Cruz for the better part of my adult life, I have become accustomed to the casual attire of a California beach town. Gary does not own a suit, the only time I dress up is for dance events, and that is optional. Conversely, Italy is a mecca of fashion. It is slowly changing, and we saw more casual dress this trip. Still, you will not find Italian women and rarely men in shorts outside of exercising. Nor in the yoga pants that we Santa Cruzians live in.

I love to look at fashion for the sake of curiosity. Interestingly, the clothing shops were full of bright colorful dresses, yet ………

I never saw a single Italian woman wearing one. The majority of the Italian women still dress in tasteful neutral colors.

Notice the pants cuffs. Rolled cuffs are in! Young and old, men and women, all had their jeans rolled at the bottom.

We tourists are always looking around, and taking pictures. And, this is what makes a vacation memorable, the photos we share, the memories we hold deep in our hearts from our travels.

Little gems

One day, as we walked around, I took pictures of little things that would normally go unnoticed. In all old European city these small pieces of “art” are everywhere. It was a good reminder to look around, enjoy the beauty, and take in the small pleasures.

High up on the side of a building, a ornate door knocker, a family crest symbol. Small depictions of history and beauty.

Metal, stone, wood, carvings, sculptures, these all represent someone’s vision, time, and creativity.

We are heading home after a wonderful time in Lucca, Italy. The Pandemic has taught us not to take life for granted. Seize the day, live your dreams, as we never know what tomorrow may bring.
