Final Days in Copenhagen – but first, a short side trip

We are off to Sweden, just because we can. A short train ride across the Great Belt Sea brings us to Malmo, Sweden for the day. Parks and food, we try smashed potatoes, Sweden’s version of French Fries. Small round butterball type potatoes, smashed, then fried. The uniqueness is the additional of Grana Padano cheese and aioli. Very yummy.

These are two different entrances, one old, one modern, to the same train station in Malmo, Sweden.

On the train ride back to Copenhagen we pay the extra 10 dollars, for first class seats, much less crowded and a table for playing Scopa.

The picture on the left is the train car on the way to Sweden, the one on the right is the train car on the way back to Copehagen, the difference is quite apparent.

Our last day in Copenhagen we take off on our bikes with no destination planned. We spend the afternoon riding the beautiful urban park paths through the city. We continue to be astounded by the number of bikes and ease of riding throughout the city. If you like to bike, this is a must visit city.

We tour the Cistern, designed in 1853. Until this time the waste of the city’s chamber pots and butchers were emptied into the gutters, seeping directly through the city’s leaky wooden pipes and into the ground water which then trickled into the drinking water causing a large Cholera outbreak in the city.

Today the Cistern tour includes art exhibits. It was difficult to take pictures as it is so dark.

These are natural dripstones found inside caves in mountains constructed by limestone. Water seepage dissolves the limestone and then deposits as dripstones. The process is slow, and they often grow less than 1/2 an inch a year. Many dripstones are more than a hundred thousand years old, obviously these are not so many years old.

Our last coffee before leaving Denmark.

We say goodbye to Copenhagen and are on our way to Lucca, Italy, our “home” away from home.

  1. Wow! You guys really know how to do it. I was going to look at the website and write a card to you but you have made my life easier by letting me comment right here. My favorite one and I can’t figure it out is the two entrances is the same train station. You guys look like you’re having so much fun. I’m so happy for you both.
