Independence Day – Italy

Liberation Day (Festa della liberazione),  April 25  is a national holiday in Italy that commemorates the victory of the Italian resistance movement against Nazi Germany and fascism, during World War II. The liberation put an end in 1945 to twenty-three years of fascist dictatorship and five years of war. In 1946 Italians opted for the end of the monarchy and the creation of the Italian Republic followed.

The streets and restaurants are full of people celebrating, the Anfiteatro is hosting a garden display and plant sale, there are street artists, music and vendors selling their artisan wares in the piazzas.

There is a strong sense of festivity all around the city.

Lucca is magical, there is really no other way to describe it. In spring the city is coming alive with flowers, and the budding greenery of the trees that line the city wall. The days are lengthening, it doesn’t get dark until after 8 in the evening. Unlike in the fall, the city is more vibrant in the evenings, the stores are open later, people, locals as well as tourists, are out and about shopping, enjoying a gelato, a glass of wine, strolling in the streets.

A piece of cake to take back to the apartment. Shopkeepers frequently wrap purchases as though they are a special gift.
