Gelato & Friends!

Yep. That’s me having some gelato again. We spent a couple of days early on this trip in Palermo tasting gelato at a festival. But there is a place in Reggio Emilia that is one of my favorites. It is called Emilia Creamery and if you ever get the chance, do not pass it up.

Here they prepare a cone with chocolate poured into the bottom. Two faucets of constantly running chocolate. Milk chocolate or dark chocolate, whichever you prefer. Poured into the cone before the scoops of gelato are plopped on top. This is truly heaven.

Here in Reggio Emilia we come to visit friends. For years we have had foreign exchange students through our house. And the friends here, are the family and friends of one of those students. We have stayed in contact with them through the years and at times they also visit us in the states.
This time a party was held at their house and they taught us how to make a traditional “tigelli” meal. The tigelli are like little flat breads freshly made and served warm. You cut them open like english muffins, and fill them with what you like. Lardo, mortadella, salami, prosciutto, cheeses, and even sweet jams if you like.

Nancy really enjoyed learning to make them.

Not only meat is available but also many vegetables are served raw, and are dipped by each person in little bowls of olive oil, and balsamic vinegar. It was a very special meal, made normally for special occasions. We were very honored.
Reggio Emilia is a university town with lots of students everywhere. And also a very nice old town center.
In the town square there are typical coffe shops, bars, and gelato everywhere, the locals come for a visit and have a snack.
Also, as we know, there can be particular fashions for each area….. here metal studs seem to be in fashion,
you can get them on your purse if you like,

or maybe you would prefer them on your heeled boots,

but don’t forget that when you are back at your home you can also walk around in spiked slippers! I think this is so no one will mess with you at home. Ouch!
Here are some other photos of Reggio Emilia,
After a few days here we needed to move on to Genoa for only one night. We spent time in Genoa with a friend who lives there. She gave us a short but nice tour of Genoa, and dinner. Genoa is a large city, so we feel we need to come back here to explore it more. Here are some of our photos from there,
This was our last day in Italy for this trip, and we were missing Italy even before we had left. Having some ability to speak the language makes a country much more personal, and comfortable………Now we move on to a bit of France!
We hope to see you here next…………. Arrivederci!
